M is for Maud who was swept out to sea

Though the storm had passed days ago, the sea was still chilly, choppy, and grey. They sky was grey, her dress was grey, and grey was the plank Maud clung to, thinking grey thoughts. Old sweaters, wet newsprint, turnip-and-barley soup, dishwater, smoke—
The searchlight swept over her head again, breaking into her contemplation. She could hear the calls of the crew and her increasingly-desperate aunt: “Maaaauuuudie! Oh, Maud, where are you?”
Maud hunkered down further on her plank, satisfied that they hadn’t spotted her yet.
Porridge, rats, mud….
